Extending the Life of Your Packaging Line

๐Ÿ”ง Maintenance ยท 5 min read

Packaging equipment often fails not because of poor quality, but because of neglected routine checks. Five minutes of daily inspection can double the lifespan of sealing components and save thousands in unplanned repairs.

Daily inspection checklist

โœ… What to check every morning

  • Sealing bar & residue โ€“ Melted plastic causes uneven seals. Clean gently with a brass brush while cold.
  • Teflon cover & fiberglass tape โ€“ Small rips or blisters lead to sticking and film jams.
  • Cooling fan and conveyor motor โ€“ Unusual noises suggest dirt or bearing wear.
  • Temperature consistency โ€“ Run film scraps through the tunnel. Uneven shrinkage means heating elements may need replacement.

Seal pressure and batch log

Keep a simple log of seal pressure settings and batch counts. When pressure drifts, you can recalibrate early โ€” before bad seals appear. Machines with digital displays make this easier, but even a manual notebook works wonders.

When to replace consumables

Signs you need new parts: wrinkled seals, film tearing at the edges, weak shrink, or burned smell from the tunnel. Always keep a small stock of essential spares: heating elements, PTFE covers, sealing wires and cut-off blades. Original or fully compatible parts maintain consistent performance.

Cleanliness is underrated

Dust and paper debris accumulate around fans and cooling vents. Vacuum these areas weekly. Also, check film roll holders for metal burrs that scratch film edges โ€” a quick sanding prevents jams. Small daily habits reduce major breakdowns and keep your packaging line running profitably.
